The study investigated the relationship between parental monitoring and juvenile delinquency among senior secondary school students in Oredo local government area of Edo state. The study employed correlational survey research design. The population consisted of 2384 senior secondary II students in Oredo local government area from which a sample of 350 students was selected from five public mixed schools using the multistage sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire developed by the researchers titled: Parental Monitoring and Juvenile Delinquency Scale (PMJDS). The instrument was validated by two test experts in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin. With the Cronbach alpha statistic, the reliability coefficient of 0.81 was obtained for the subscale of parental monitoring and a 0.87 was obtained for juvenile delinquency. The Pearson Product Moment correlation statistics was used to test hypothesis one while hypothesis two was tested with Fisher-Z statistics. Testing all hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance, the findings show a negligible positive and non-statistically significant relationship between parental monitoring and juvenile delinquency. The relationship between parental monitoring and juvenile delinquency is not significantly influenced by sex. It was recommended that counsellors should adopt multidimensional delinquency-prevention programmes that address parental practices, peer influence, school climate, self-control, and other relevant risk factors. Parents should be encouraged to maintain awareness of their children’s activities and peer relationships.References
